What is TMD / TMJ?

Tempormandibular Joint (TMJ) is a paired joint, where the lower jaw (mandible) meets the temporal bone of the skull just in front of the ears. This is the most complex joint in the body.
Temporomandibular Disorder (TMD) is the name given to the condition that negativity affects the joint. You can imagine the strain that we place on this joint as we breathe, talk, eat and swallow (2,000 times) on a daily basis as well as clench and grind teeth.

What are the typical symptoms of TMD?

  • Pain in the chewing muscles or jaw joint.
  • Neck and shoulder pain
  • Facial pain ( A tired feeling in the face)
  • Ear pain
  • Headaches & migraines
  • Clicking jaw
  • A jaw that locks or limited movement
  • Toothaches
  • Difficulty chewing

Treatment of TMDs is a specialized area of dentistry.
Dr. Zaha Amarin is a specialist in the diagnosis and treatment of TMD, Georgetown University- USA, and has been treating patients with TMD for over 20 years.
Dr. Zaha is a founder and acts as president of Jordanian Commission of Orofacial Pain and Dysfunction (JCOPD)
Dr. Zaha will conduct a careful history and physical exam of your head, neck, face, teeth and jaw. Sometimes MRI and /or radiographic studies are needed. Treatment is custom tailored to each patient depending on the diagnosis.
